The federal government mandates "reasonable accommodations" to meet the needs of disabled citizens, but providing accommodations is often expensive, difficult to arrange, and most often not on the "top of the priority list".  This leaves the individual who is hearing impaired in the position of providing their own translator, to not participate, or not attend specific events or activities.

 

Without this accommodation, these individuals are dependent upon others to repeat or explain what was shared via the amplified sound system often disturbing others sitting around them.

With the accommodation of large format OPEN captions all members of the audience see the captions displayed.  When OPEN captions are shown on a separate screen or message strip it is often necessary to group those individuals who depend upon the captions in separate seating in close proximity to the large display.  When OPEN captions are displayed on the main screen or sign interpretation is provided, it is often necessary to schedule a specific performance when the accommodation will be available. In addition, many individuals find the presence of OPEN captioning distracting.  It is also noted that many live stage performers find it unsettling when audience members are looking toward the OPEN captions (screen or message board) rather than at the actors on the stage.

   

Both these methods have a tendency to stigmatize, segregate and label the individuals who attend these designated performances in order to receive the accommodation they need.

 

Some individuals liked the accommodation of OPEN captions ONLY at specific presentations to having portable wheelchair ramps and only bringing them out on certain days.

 

    PCS captions are provided in a discreet manner, providing captions to any seat, at every performance.

Membership in the PCS community is the best way to stay in touch with new products and services.  It allows you to receive periodic updates to our Captionmate software that allows you to convert a PocketPC / PDA into a portable captioning display unit.  The unit will then make it possible for you to receive and display captions during presentations at a multitude of venues providing our new PCS captioning service.  If you wish we can also forward to you announcements of the locations of venues that have installed PCS captioning systems and convenient links to those making this most important accommodation available to those who would benefit.

Although you can use your own PocketPC PDA to run the Captionmate software, for your convenience, we sell PocketPC PDA with the software preloaded.
